Rural Community decarbonisation – an update on the REACH innovation project
Background
From March to May 2024, Regen was involved in an Ofgem-funded innovation project exploring alternative options for rural communities in constrained electricity network areas to achieve their decarbonisation ambitions. This is known as the “Discovery” phase.
We were exploring the potential for an “energy centre” coupled with a battery, Electric Vehicle chargers, smart controls and a centrally controlled heating system to enable rural communities to decarbonise heat and transport faster than they otherwise would be able to.
During the Discovery phase, we explored this idea and learned more about how it could work in communities. We also selected seven community organisations to partner with us on the project.
In December 2024, we found out that we’ve been successful in our application to continue the project into the next phase, running for 6 months from December to June 2025.
Why are we holding this event?
During the Discovery phase, we were overwhelmed by the number of community energy organisations interested in this project, and we want to extend a big thank you to all of you who participated. It was important and exciting for us to learn about the ambition of rural communities and the scale of the issue we’re looking to address.
We’re holding this event to share an update on how the project has progressed over the past nine months, what we achieved in the first phase, and what we’re looking to do over the next few months and, hopefully, years.
We’d also love to get your feedback on a tool we plan to develop to support rural communities in accessing alternative decarbonisation opportunities in the future.
What will it involve?
At this event, you will:
- Learn more about the challenges of rural decarbonisation
- Hear from the project partners about the progress made, plans for the next phase, and how the results could impact you.
- Hear about opportunities to continue being involved and informed about our project progress.
- Influence the creation of a tool that could help rural communities to decarbonise in the future.
How to sign up
