Communities are increasingly expected to play a central role in delivering the energy transition – from community-owned renewables and local retrofit to fuel poverty support and local energy advice. Yet many, particularly those facing income inequality and marginalisation, have seen their capacity eroded over the past decade by austerity measures and rising living costs. Understanding and building capacity among communities will be crucial to realising a transition that benefits and empowers everyone.
This webinar launches our new paper, Building Blocks – Developing community capacity for a just transition, and explores what community capacity really looks like in practice, why it varies so widely between places, and what needs to change to support its growth at scale.
Watch it back
Author Robbie Evans discusses this research with Zarina Ahmad of Wen (Women's Environmental Network), Clare Richards from Community Energy Scotland and Alex Chatzieleftheriou, Local Power Plan lead at Great British Energy.
In this session you will:
- Hear key insights from the Building Blocks paper
- Gain a clearer understanding of what enables communities to lead and benefit from local energy action – and what holds them back
- Explore, alongside our expert panel, how policy, funding and delivery frameworks can better support deeper, more inclusive community capacity building
- Discuss how the energy transition can become an opportunity for communities, rather than reinforcing existing inequalities.
