We kick off our 2026 ‘In Conversation With…’ policy event series with an in-person event featuring Dan McGrail, chief executive of Great British Energy (GBE).
Regen chief executive Merlin Hyman will host the discussion, exploring GBE's priorities and how the establishment of a public energy developer and strategic investor will impact the clean energy sector. Key discussion areas will include:
* How GBE Local will deliver on its aim to make "local energy and community ownership commonplace" - and what we can expect in the forthcoming DESNZ/GBE Local Power Plan.
* GBE's aim to establish a 15 GW + portfolio of clean energy assets, including "unlocking the next frontier in offshore wind: deeper waters"and to "mobilise £15bn of private finance" by 2030
* How GBE's will work with the existing sector on investing in flexibility and storage
This session offers a valuable opportunity to engage directly with Dan, discuss collaboration opportunities and hear how he plans to address the key challenges and opportunities ahead as we enter a pivotal delivery phase in the transition to clean power. The discussion will be followed by a drinks reception so you can engage with industry colleagues at the start of an important year for our sector.

The Electricity Storage Network Annual Conference is a platform for key industry players and policymakers to gather and debate what’s needed to attract and maintain the billions of pounds of investment required for this crucial asset class – from supportive policy and regulatory frameworks to shifting revenue strategies and evolving business models.
With over 5 GW of grid-scale battery storage operational and a 3 GW pipeline of new pumped hydro storage projects, plus other technologies in development, grid-scale electricity storage is established as key to a zero-carbon energy system – a testament to the success of our 100+ members.
And with an ambitious Clean Power 2030 action plan for accelerated clean power, against the backdrop of significant grid connection and market reform, and a long duration energy storage cap and floor scheme, the role of storage and flexibility is more important than ever.
At the ESN Annual Conference you’ll hear directly from our members and key decision makers from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator on the latest changes across a range of topics critical to the storage sector, including Clean Power 2030, the revenue environment, long duration energy storage, grid connection reform and fire safety.
This is also an opportunity to learn about the ESN’s work to ensure policy, markets and regulation are geared to enable the storage sector to flourish and grow at the pace and scale required while networking with 300+ industry leaders in central London.

The Electricity Storage Network is the industry group for electricity storage in Great Britain. Managed by Regen, it brings together more than 100 organisations and 500 industry professionals who are working to develop, operate and supply storage in the GB market.

Merlin leads Regen's mission to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon energy system. Under his leadership, Regen has developed into a leading organisation shaping the strategic pathway to a clean energy future.While focusing on the systemic challenges of decarbonising power, heat and transport, Merlin is a leading voice in grid connection reform, chairing NESO's Connections Reform Advisory Group. He also sits on several leading forums, including DESNZ/Ofgem's Connections Delivery Board.
Merlin has spent his career working for solutions to the climate crisis, championing public policies that unlock the power of businesses and communities to transform our energy system. Previously, he was a director of the Environmental Industries Commission, where he worked in Whitehall and Westminster to ensure government support for companies providing environmental solutions. Merlin is also a non-executive director for Communities for Renewables. He is an influential figure in energy policy and was awarded an OBE in 2019 for services to sustainable energy.
Merlin can often be found attempting yoga or messing about on boats in Devon.
Dan McGrail has been appointed as the permanent Chief Executive Officer of Great British Energy, a company owned by the British people, to help drive forward the government’s Plan for Change and make the UK a clean energy superpower.
His appointment brings world-class private sector experience to Great British Energy, with the former Chief Executive of RenewableUK and CEO of Siemens Engines now leading the UK’s publicly-owned clean power revolution.
