Poppy Maltby

Head of local energy
Regen

Regen is working with the Greater London Authority (GLA) to explore how Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES) can help overcome grid constraints, make better use of existing energy infrastructure and support London's transition to a cleaner, more flexible energy system.

By bringing together local energy generation, storage, flexible demand and innovative technologies and business models, SLES have the potential to support a more coordinated and efficient approach to meeting London's energy needs.

This project will explore how these approaches could be developed and scaled across London, identifying opportunities, barriers and potential pathways towards delivery.

‍

Join the GLA and Regen for a 30-minute introduction to the project - 12th November 2026 (12.30-13.00)

Our introductory webinar will cover:

  • The GLA's wider ambitions for flexibility and smart local energy systems in London.
  • The objectives and priorities of the project.
  • How organisations can stay informed and potentially contribute as the work develops.
  • An opportunity to ask questions.

‍

Stay informed and get involved

If you book for our introductory webinar, you'll automatically be able to register your interest in future events and opportunities to contribute to this project.

If you're unable to join for the webinar, but would like to sign up to hear about future events and opportunities related to this project, simply select this option via the registration button.

‍

What will the project do?

Regen will work with the GLA and stakeholders across the energy sector to:

  • Develop and assess different SLES archetypes relevant to London's energy system.
  • Explore how SLES could help address grid constraints and enable greater flexibility.
  • Identify opportunities, capabilities and partnerships that could support future delivery.
  • Understand the technical, commercial and institutional barriers to scaling SLES.
  • Develop recommendations and pathways to support further development and investment.

Stakeholder engagement will be central to the project, bringing together expertise and perspectives from across London's energy ecosystem.

‍

Who should get involved?

We'd welcome interest from organisations working in or contributing to local energy systems, including:

  • Technology and solution providers.
  • Aggregators, flexibility providers and energy suppliers.
  • Energy storage and generation providers.
  • Commercial and industrial energy users.
  • Network and energy system technology partners.
  • Community energy organisations.
  • Other organisations with relevant expertise, capabilities or an interest in SLES development.

Whether you're already delivering innovative energy solutions or are interested in emerging opportunities, we'd welcome the opportunity to connect.

The Electricity Storage Network Annual Conference is a platform for key industry players and policymakers to gather and debate what’s needed to attract and maintain the billions of pounds of investment required for this crucial asset class – from supportive policy and regulatory frameworks to shifting revenue strategies and evolving business models.

With over 5 GW of grid-scale battery storage operational and a 3 GW pipeline of new pumped hydro storage projects, plus other technologies in development, grid-scale electricity storage is established as key to a zero-carbon energy system – a testament to the success of our 100+ members.

And with an ambitious Clean Power 2030 action plan for accelerated clean power, against the backdrop of significant grid connection and market reform, and a long duration energy storage cap and floor scheme, the role of storage and flexibility is more important than ever.

At the ESN Annual Conference you’ll hear directly from our members and key decision makers from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ofgem and the National Energy System Operator on the latest changes across a range of topics critical to the storage sector, including Clean Power 2030, the revenue environment, long duration energy storage, grid connection reform and fire safety.

This is also an opportunity to learn about the ESN’s work to ensure policy, markets and regulation are geared to enable the storage sector to flourish and grow at the pace and scale required while networking with 300+ industry leaders in central London.
