At Regen, we have closely followed the development of the RESP since it was first announced by Ofgem in 2023. We're very supportive of introducing greater local representation into the process of infrastructure planning and delivery, so it's exciting to see the details of NESO's approach released in yesterday's consultation, bringing the vision a big leap closer to reality.
The consultation provides detail about the process for governance, engagement and local actor support – as well as providing information about how NESO will create pathways and incorporate strategic investment needs. Consultation responses are due by 16 January 2026 – so a great Christmas present for us all!
We will be reviewing the consultation in detail over the coming weeks, considering the perspectives of local authorities and wider energy system stakeholders. Myself and others in the Regen team will be attending NESO’s 'deep dive consultation webinars' happening over the next couple of weeks, and we’ll be sharing our thoughts on the big issues and debates in the new year.
You can access all of the detail on the consultation and sign up for the webinars via NESO’s RESP consultation page. As this link is hard to spot, you can also find them on NESO's events calendar. The six webinars run from 25 November to 3 December.
In the meantime, check out our recent Ready for RESP event , our t-RESP consultation response, and our handy guide for local areas needing to prepare for the changing system of energy planning.
