Regen has been commissioned by Energy Networks Association to undertake an independent assessment of the issues and challenges that the electricity system faces – both as the transition is made to Distribution System Operators (DSOs) and in delivering rapid decarbonisation to achieve net zero.

The electricity system is changing and, with it, new functions, processes and governance structures are emerging that will be required to run a smart electricity distribution network.

As part of the transition to Distribution System Operators (DSO), the electricity networks, regulator and wider sector are working to define the functions that a DSO delivers and the organisational governance that supports it.

Regen has been commissioned by Energy Networks Association to undertake an independent assessment of the issues and challenges that the electricity system faces – both in the transition to DSOs and in enabling rapid decarbonisation to achieve net zero.

We are therefore inviting stakeholders to provide feedback on the challenges and issues the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) should focus on to support the net zero energy transition. We want to know where their efforts could most appropriately and most effectively be directed to address this future challenge.

This is a critical opportunity to shape the future of the electricity system.

We are very grateful for all responses and the time you give to complete the survey. Find out more detail about what’s in the survey in the Q&A below.

Respond to the survey here

What is in the survey?

The survey starts with questions about you and then your interactions with DNO/DSOs to date. For subsequent sections, we invite views on six topics, covering:

  1. Enabling renewable generation and low carbon technologies to connect
  2. Unlocking open, efficient flexibility markets
  3. Local network planning and coordination
  4. Protecting vulnerable customers, ensuring a just transition and energy efficiency
  5. Supporting the digitalisation of the energy system and an open approach to data
  6. Engaging effectively with stakeholders

You will have the option to answer questions for each topic or to skip to the next section.

Who is the survey for?

We are seeking views from across the whole energy sector and wider society – if you have a stake in the future electricity system, we want to hear from you.

How will my answers be used?

Your responses will be used to inform Regen’s independent assessment, which will be presented to the DNOs to shape their thinking and future work plan through the Open Networks project.

Your data will be analysed and processed for the purpose of this survey and resulting report and will not be used for any other purpose.

How long will the survey take me?

The survey should take between 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

What is the deadline and where can I get help?

The survey will close on Sunday 8 August.
