9th March 2018 - 10th March 2018

This open space event was hosted by communities, for communities. We met at the beautiful Dartington estate in Devon for a two-day, fun filled residential, including walks, talks, films, fantastic food and collaborative discussion themed around community energy innovation and consolidation.

Community energy is all about direct action for incredible impact, but this takes courage, considerable human effort, motivation and inspiration.

This event was about supporting each other, and building our own community of practitioners. By sharing our experience, learning from each other and building mutual trust and understanding, we gained valuable input and perspectives on the issues that matter to us. During the two days we concentrated on consolidation of our existing projects, discussing how to make the most of our renewable energy assets, and explored what happens next for our movement. We be shared stories about how we are innovating, what new and exciting projects we are developing, and how we could make new business models and revenue streams work.

Here’s some of the topics we covered:

  • Innovation – local supply and distribution, network innovation, renewable energy generation technologies, project economics and financing, how to raise £ millions, and secondary market for solar.
  • Consolidation – education and schools, rooftop PV lease busting, collective action and co-ordination, collective ownership of renewables, fuel poverty and energy advice services, managing your assets more effectively, avoiding risk, arts and energy.

This event was planned and organised by community energy practitioners in Devon, with the support of Regen, Power to Change and Western Power Distribution. It was subsidised for community energy practitioners.

Community Energy Spring 2018c

“The open space format of the Spring Gathering was brilliant because it allowed us to set our own agenda and really make the most of sharing and learning from the expertise and experience we all have as community energy people. It was great to feel part of this national movement and catch up with ‘colleagues’ from across the UK.”

Sophie Phillips, South Dartmoor Community Energy

“The Spring Gathering was a wonderful opportunity to meet with community energy practitioners from across the country, share experiences, review progress, walk & talk and have fun on the Dartington Estate in the glorious Devon countryside.  Looking forward to the next one!”

Ian Bright, TRESOC
