Local authorities, cities and regions have a key role in the development of renewable generation as planning authorities. However, they can also play a more direct role as landowners, developers and purchasers of power in enabling renewable energy project development.
Local authorities who have declared a climate emergency will be hoping to encourage more renewable energy to be built and hoping at the same time to maximise the local benefits from this clean growth.
The key to this is to obtain a guaranteed and long-term price for power that helps both the developer and demand customer manage the market price risk.
This webinar outlined the existing approaches that local authorities can take to support local renewables, as well as introduced emerging business models. It provided the chance to hear from local authorities including Devon County Council, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Bristol City Council and ask questions of an expert panel who have been exploring these approaches.
