Regen’s members have identified the planning system for clean energy projects as not fit for purpose, creating delays that impact the deployment of essential renewable energy and storage projects. A streamlined planning process will be essential for meeting our ambitious renewable energy targets in a way that also maintains public acceptance. As the general election approaches and political parties carve out their policy agendas, there is a timely opportunity to try to influence senior policymakers and Parliamentarians on planning reform.

The aim of this event is to bring together key players in the renewables and storage sector to discuss the key challenges in the planning system and initial policy suggestions for planning reform. We will hear the views of leading planning experts with the aim of collectively refining and shaping the proposals that Regen puts forward to policy makers. We will also discuss whether to set up a Regen members’ Planning Working Group going forward.

The agenda will include four key speakers covering the following topics:

  • Planning for transmission infrastructure: key issues and the future role of a Strategic Spatial Energy Plan
  • The new National Policy Statements and reforms to the NSIP process
  • Challenges faced at the local authority level including onshore wind, solar, energy storage and planning delays
  • A discussion of the priorities for planning reform at both a NSIP and local authority level.
