Guide aims to set out a clearer path to planning consent for community-led renewables

Community energy organisations are uniquely placed to accelerate the energy transition by delivering locally owned renewable projects that build public support, retain value in communities and contribute to national net zero goals. However, navigating the planning system remains one of the most complex barriers to project delivery.

NGED’s Community Energy Planning Guidance outlines how community energy groups can position their projects for success, from identifying suitable sites and engaging stakeholders early, to preparing robust planning applications supported by appropriate technical and environmental evidence. It also emphasises the critical role of community engagement in building trust and ensuring projects deliver meaningful local benefit.

Importantly, the guide situates community energy within the wider strategic context. As new spatial energy plans, Local Area Energy Plans and land use frameworks begin to shape where infrastructure is built, community organisations have a growing opportunity to play a central role in delivering locally appropriate, locally supported renewable capacity.

This guidance includes sections on:
